XYZ
“The eye does not see things, but images of things that mean other things” from InvisibleCities, Italo Calvino, 1972.
The real boundaries of a city are incomprehensible. Continuous cities, mixed up places. Abstract landscapes where black is the element that inspires the imagination. Profiles and structures are taken away from the scene: lights, windows, signs, bright details, the essence of the city remain. We can sense the shapes, the ones beyond the lights, although they lack, because the daily experience of the city suggests us the solution. The image is constructed by the visualisation of the three Cartesian axes xyz: x, the horizontal line, the usual dimension in which urban agglomerations continue to extend, widening and making the boundaries indefinable;y, the vertical line, the stratification of housing, different heights adapt villages to metropolis. And finally z, the depth, dug windows nestled in the dark.
